Treatment of Well-Differentiated Gastric Neuroendocrine Tumor (NET)

This protocol addresses patients with a well-differentiated gastric neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the gastrointestinal tract — a clinically and biologically distinct category from poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), which follows a separate management pathway.

Clinical scenario: Well-differentiated gastric NET of the gastrointestinal tract. Correct histological classification — confirming the tumor is well-differentiated (NET) rather than poorly differentiated (NEC) — is a prerequisite for applying this protocol, as the two entities are managed differently.

The protocol incorporates a molecular targeted drug approach for tumor control. The full regimen, eligibility criteria, and supporting evidence are contained within the structured protocol.

The WHO Classification of Endocrine Organs (2017) and Digestive System (2019) categorizes NENs as well-differentiated NENs (termed “NETs”) or poorly differentiated NECs.

Regarding molecular targeted drugs, insurance covers everolimus and sunitinib for pancreatic NETs as well as everolimus for gastrointestinal NETs.
