Treatment of Functional Dyspepsia in Helicobacter pylori Infection

Clinical scenario

Functional dyspepsia (FD) in a patient with confirmed Helicobacter pylori infection is a well-defined clinical situation requiring targeted management. Eradication of H. pylori has been shown to be an efficacious treatment strategy in this population.

Management approach

In addition to addressing the underlying H. pylori infection, symptom control in this setting may involve a prokinetic agent.

The complete regimen — specific agent selection, sequencing, and all clinical parameters — is contained in the full structured protocol.

Eradication therapy is an efficacious treatment for H. pylori-positive patients with FD.

Some prokinetics may be an efficacious treatment for FD. However, efficacy varies according to drug class, and many of these drugs are unavailable outside of Asia and the USA.

In terms of other prokinetics, acotiamide, which is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, itopride, which is a dopamine antagonist, and mosapride and tegaserod, which are 5-HT4 receptor agonists, have all been evaluated in FD.
