Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) causes progressive dysfunction of corneal endothelial cells, leading to corneal edema and reduced visual clarity. Initial management focuses on palliative nonsurgical measures to address the resulting corneal swelling.
Currently available nonsurgical treatment for FECD is palliative. The approach centres on corneal dehydration strategies — a partial list of options is outlined in the full protocol.
Reduction of corneal epithelial edema.

Currently available nonsurgical treatment for FECD is palliative and is limited to measures of corneal dehydration such as use of a hair dryer or topical application of hypertonic 5% sodium chloride eye drops or ointment.
These approaches likely reduce epithelial edema without reducing stromal edema.
