Treatment of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms and Overactive Bladder in Friedreich Ataxia

Clinical Scenario

This protocol addresses individuals with Friedreich ataxia who present with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), specifically urinary storage symptoms consistent with an overactive bladder pattern.

Approach Overview

Before initiating pharmacological therapy, a structured pre-treatment assessment is recommended — including exclusion of a concomitant urinary tract infection and evaluation of post-micturition residual urine. A trial of antimuscarinic agents may then be considered for eligible individuals.

Agent selection, monitoring, and the full clinical algorithm are available in the complete protocol.
