This protocol addresses adults (18 years or older) diagnosed with Friedreich ataxia who also have diabetes mellitus. Concurrent diabetes is a recognised comorbidity in this population and requires deliberate clinical management alongside the underlying neurological condition.
There is insufficient evidence to favor a single standardised first-line approach for adults with lower-risk diabetes mellitus and Friedreich ataxia. Treatment decisions must account for individual patient factors — heterogeneity in how this comorbidity presents in Friedreich ataxia makes a one-size-fits-all approach inappropriate.
Management centres on an individualized selection of glucose-lowering therapy, with the choice guided by the patient's clinical profile and risk level. The complete algorithm — including how different risk presentations determine the therapeutic path — is available in the full protocol.
