Treatment of Focal Nodular Hyperplasia Presenting with Abdominal Pain

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is most often discovered incidentally and managed conservatively. When symptoms such as abdominal pain are present, a distinct clinical assessment and management pathway applies.

Clinical Scenario

Focal nodular hyperplasia with symptoms such as abdominal pain — a presentation requiring careful evaluation of the relationship between the lesion and the reported symptoms before determining the appropriate course of action.

Management Approach

In this symptomatic setting, a surgical intervention directed at the lesion may be considered — though the decision involves specific clinical criteria and important patient counselling regarding expected outcomes.

In the rare case of symptoms such as pain, surgical resection may be considered, but most FNH lesions are incidental to symptoms rather than the cause of symptoms and patients should be educated that their symptoms may not improve after surgery.
