Treatment of Advanced or Metastatic Oesophageal Squamous-Cell Carcinoma with PD-L1 TPS ≥1%
Advanced or metastatic oesophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) with a PD-L1 tumour proportion score (TPS) of 1% or more represents a biomarker-defined subgroup that carries specific treatment implications. Accurate PD-L1 TPS assessment is central to selecting the appropriate clinical approach for these patients.
Clinical scenario
Advanced or metastatic oesophageal squamous-cell carcinoma with PD-L1 tumour proportion score (TPS) of 1% or more. PD-L1 TPS testing is required to confirm eligibility for this protocol.
Treatment approach
For fit patients in this setting, a chemotherapy-based regimen is indicated — involving specific cytotoxic agent classes. The complete regimen, sequencing, and eligibility criteria are contained in the full structured protocol.

- NivolumabeChT is recommended in patients with tumours expressing PD-L1 with a TPS 1% [I, A; ESMO-MCBS v1.1 score: 4].
- ChT with a taxane or irinotecan can be considered in fit patients who have been previously treated with platinum–fluoropyrimidine and/or nivolumab or pembrolizumab [II, B].
