Treatment of Ebola Virus Disease with Mild to Moderate Dehydration (3–9% Volume Depletion)

This protocol addresses Ebola virus disease patients presenting with mild to moderate dehydration — estimated at 3–9% volume depletion — with ongoing fluid losses, no haemodynamic shock, and who retain the ability to drink.

Patients without shock but with ongoing fluid losses represent a specific and critical subgroup in Ebola management. Maintaining fluid balance in this population requires close attention to the degree of volume depletion and the rate of continued losses.

The structured regimen involves intravenous fluid therapy, with specific fluid selection differing between adult and paediatric patients and guided by regular monitoring. The complete sequencing, fluid choices, and monitoring parameters are detailed in the full protocol.

  1. Patients without shock but with ongoing fluid losses (mild-moderate dehydration – see Section 2.4 Fluid status)
  2. For adult patients unable to drink sufficient volumes of liquids to maintain hydration status, it is recommended to give IV fluids.
  3. In adults, it is recommended to alternate between 0.9% saline and Ringer's lactate.
  4. In children, use Ringer's lactate if available but monitor the serum electrolytes regularly.
