Ebola Virus Disease in Mild to Moderate Dehydration with Ongoing Fluid Losses

In Ebola virus disease, fluid loss is a key driver of deterioration. This protocol targets patients who have developed mild to moderate dehydration but have not progressed to shock and retain the ability to drink.

Clinical scenario

Management approach

The approach for this scenario is centred on oral rehydration using oral rehydration salts (ORS), with structured guidance on volume estimation, timing, dietary continuation, and management of vomiting should it arise. The complete protocol — including how the ORS volume is determined, the administration schedule, and when adjunctive therapy should be considered — is available in the full regimen below.

References

  1. Patients without shock but with ongoing fluid losses (mild-moderate dehydration – see Section 2.4 Fluid status)
  2. To determine the approximate amount of ORS required (ml), multiply the patient's weight (kg) by 75.
  3. Give the recommended amount of ORS over a 4-hour period.
  4. Consider treating with an anti-emetic and continuing with ORS.
