Treatment of Ebola Virus Disease with Mild to Moderate Dehydration
This protocol covers management of Ebola virus disease in patients with mild to moderate dehydration — 3–9% volume depletion — who have ongoing fluid losses, no shock, and remain able to drink.
Clinical Scenario
Ebola virus disease with mild to moderate dehydration (3–9% volume depletion). Ongoing fluid losses are present. No shock. Patient is able to drink.
Treatment Approach
The protocol involves oral rehydration using oral rehydration salts (ORS), with weight-based volume guidance and a defined administration window. Patients are counselled on continued oral fluid and nutritional intake. If vomiting develops, the approach includes a stepwise response — including consideration of anti-emetic therapy — to sustain oral rehydration.
Complete regimen details — including volume calculations, timing, and decision points — are available in the full structured protocol.
References
- Patients without shock but with ongoing fluid losses (mild-moderate dehydration – see Section 2.4 Fluid status)
- To determine the approximate amount of ORS required (ml), multiply the patient's weight (kg) by 75.
- Give the recommended amount of ORS over a 4-hour period.
- Consider treating with an anti-emetic and continuing with ORS.
