This protocol applies to patients with primary generalized dystonia or primary segmental dystonia — forms of dystonia where the movement disorder arises without an identifiable structural or metabolic cause and affects either the whole body or a contiguous body region.
When medication or botulinum toxin (BoNT) therapy has not provided adequate improvement, a neurosurgical intervention targeting a specific deep brain structure may be indicated for eligible patients.

Pallidal DBS is considered a good option, particularly for primary generalized or segmental dystonia, after medication or BoNT has failed to provide adequate improvement (level A).
