What Is the First-Line Treatment for Drug-Induced Hemolytic Anemia?
Clinical Context
When drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia (DIIHA) is suspected, identifying the relevant medication is the critical first step. The anticipated course with appropriate management is a return to haematological stability.
First-Line Approach (partial)
First-line management is directed at the suspected causative medication. Haematological recovery is the expected outcome with timely intervention.
The complete protocol — including all recommended supportive measures — is available via the link below.
Treatment Goal
Haematological improvement and resolution of haemolysis, expected within 1–2 weeks of addressing the causative agent.
References
- The suspected drug should be stopped and haematological improvement usually occurs in 1-2 weeks.
- Hence if DIIHA is suspected, relevant medication should be stopped.
- Patients should receive folic acid.
