Dehydration with History of Diarrhoea and/or Vomiting and Reduced Urine Output
This protocol applies to patients presenting with dehydration in the setting of diarrhoea and/or vomiting, where reduced urine output and at least two clinical signs of dehydration are present.
Clinical Scenario
History of diarrhoea and/or vomiting with reduced urine output, plus at least 2 of the following signs:
- Restless or irritable mental status
- Palpable radial pulse
- Sunken eyes
- Skin pinch returns slowly (< 2 seconds)
- Thirst — drinks quickly

- History of diarrhoea and/or vomiting and concomitant reduced urine output.
- At least 2 of the following signs: Restless or irritable; Palpable; Sunken; Goes back slowly (< 2 seconds); Thirst, drinks quickly.
Treatment
- Administer ORS according to WHO Treatment Plan B which equates to 75 ml/kg ORS given over 4 hours.
- Encourage additional age-appropriate fluid intake, including breastfeeding in young children.
