The classical symptomatic treatment of renal colic should be used with urologists involved in the management of patients from admission.
In patients with refractory pain or those with a low probability of passing the stone with conservative management, ureteroscopic stone removal or extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) should be undertaken in a timely manner.
Renal decompression (with stent or nephrostomy) should be undertaken in patients with infected or obstructed kidneys.
