Treatment of New World Mucosal Leishmaniasis with Nasal, Pharyngeal, Laryngeal, or Palate Involvement

New World mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) can extend to involve the nasal mucosa, pharynx, larynx, and palate. When mucosal structures are affected, the anatomical spread makes local treatment impractical or ineffective, and systemic treatment becomes mandatory.

This protocol addresses patients with New World mucosal leishmaniasis confirmed to have involvement of the nasal mucosa, pharynx, larynx, or palate — a presentation requiring a systemic therapeutic approach.

Treatment approach

Systemic antiparasitic therapy is the required intervention in this setting. Multiple systemic agent options are available for this indication, chosen according to disease extent and patient-specific factors — the complete selection criteria, sequencing, and regimen details are available in the full protocol.
