Treatment of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Caused by Leishmania mexicana

Clinical Scenario

This protocol applies to patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis in which the causative species is Leishmania mexicana. Species identification is clinically relevant: the particular natural history of L. mexicana infection directly informs which management pathway is appropriate.

Management Approach

For patients meeting specific criteria around lesion characteristics and patient circumstances, a conservative approach without antileishmanial medication may be a suitable option — the complete eligibility criteria and clinical pathway are detailed in the full protocol.

Treatment goal: Complete reepithelialization of the cutaneous lesion
