Treatment of Cowden Syndrome in Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most frequent malignancy in Cowden syndrome. Its hereditary context carries specific clinical implications that distinguish management from sporadic breast cancer cases.

Patients with Cowden syndrome who develop breast cancer present within a germline setting that affects recurrence risk and surgical decision-making. Compared with non-hereditary breast cancer, the pattern of intra-mammary recurrence differs, requiring a tailored approach to local control.

The preferred surgical option differs from standard breast-conserving approaches used in the general population; systemic and radiation strategies are also addressed in this protocol. Full regimen details, sequencing, and clinical rationale are available in the structured protocol below.

  1. Breast cancer is the most frequent type of malignancy in this syndrome.
  2. However, hereditary breast cancer has a higher rate of intra-mammary recurrence than normal breast cancer when treated with breast-conserving therapy, and mastectomy is the preferred surgical option.
  3. No study has provided specific information on drug and radiation therapies for breast cancer in this syndrome, and the same treatment methods for breast cancer in the general population are currently selected.
