When a corneal foreign body occurs in the context of contact lens use, vegetable or organic plant matter, or a fingernail — the mechanism of injury shifts the clinical risk profile and directly informs the management approach.
This protocol is for patients presenting with a corneal foreign body where the mechanism of injury involves contact lens wear, exposure to organic/vegetable plant matter, or fingernail trauma. These mechanisms carry a heightened risk of infection from specific organisms and require tailored antibiotic prophylaxis beyond standard care.
The first step is foreign body removal performed by an ophthalmologist at a slit lamp, regardless of material or depth. Because of the mechanism of injury, targeted antibiotic prophylaxis is a core component of the regimen — the specific agents, schedule, and additional measures for pain and inflammatory complications are detailed in the full protocol.
Symptom improvement confirmed at 24-hour follow-up. Corneal abrasions in appropriately managed cases typically heal within 2 to 3 days.
