What is the treatment approach for chronic recurrent parotitis?
Chronic recurrent parotitis is characterised by repeated episodes of parotid gland inflammation. Management aims to reduce episode frequency and severity through both conservative measures and targeted ductal interventions.
Treatment overview (partial)
First-line management centres on conservative supportive therapy. When conservative measures are insufficient, attention turns to the Stensen duct — including lavage and, in selected cases, a sclerotic procedural approach. The complete sequenced protocol with full clinical detail is available below.

- Antibiotics, analgesics, mouthrinses, and sialogogues are considered as the primary line of treatment.
- Lavage with normal saline 0.9% solution and manipulation with lacrimal probe via the orifice of the Stensen duct are taken into consideration when possible.
- Tetracycline instillation into the parotid duct can also have effective results through its sclerotic and cytotoxic effects on the gland.
