Treatment of Febrile Illness and Acute Infection in Chronic Granulomatous Disease

In patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a fever of 38 °C or above — or any acute infection — demands prompt clinical action. Early and appropriate antibiotic treatment is central to management.

Clinical scenario

Febrile illness (temperature of 38 °C or above) or acute infection in a patient with confirmed CGD. Any such episode should be treated promptly with antibiotics, proceeding to appropriate intravenous therapy where necessary.

Treatment approach

Oral Ciprofloxacin is recommended as a first-line agent, valued for its spectrum of activity and its capacity to penetrate intracellularly. Specific dosing — including weight-based paediatric dosing and adult dosing — along with escalation criteria, is set out in the full protocol.

Complete regimen and sequencing available via the structured protocol below.
