This protocol addresses paediatric patients under 18 years of age presenting with cholera where severe acute malnutrition is not present. Clinical management is guided by the child's hydration status at presentation.
Children in this group are evaluated for degree of dehydration. The protocol distinguishes between no dehydration and some dehydration, directing appropriate management for each. The absence of severe acute malnutrition allows oral rehydration to be the primary approach.
Management is built around oral rehydration with Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), given according to the child's hydration status — whether Plan A or Plan B applies. Zinc supplementation is started promptly alongside rehydration. Specific quantities, timing, age-based schedules, and the full clinical algorithm are available in the complete protocol.
