Chalazion with Suspected Viral Etiology, Masquerade Syndrome, or Purulent Component
Not all chalazia are alike. Certain presentations — including liquid chalazia, cases where masquerade syndrome is a concern, suspected virally induced lesions, atypical chalazia, and those with a purulent component — require a distinct clinical approach compared to a straightforward meibomian cyst.
Clinical scenario
This protocol applies to liquid chalazia; cases of masquerade syndrome; virally induced chalazia (suspected viral etiology); atypical chalazia; and those that have a purulent component. Correct identification of the presentation type directly guides the management choice.
References
- These include liquid chalazia; cases of masquerade syndrome; virally induced chalazia; atypical chalazia; and those that have a purulent component.
- If a viral etiology is suspected, the use of intralesional corticosteroids should be avoided.
- Some types of chalazia are more amenable to I&C than to TA injection.
