Treatment of Cerebral Toxoplasmosis in Pregnancy

This protocol addresses toxoplasma encephalitis (TE) arising during pregnancy. Treatment should follow evidence-based guidance and be undertaken in consultation with appropriate specialists.

For pregnant women with TE who are unable to tolerate or do not respond to the standard regimen, a preferred alternative combination therapy is available. The complete regimen — including specific agents, dosing, and duration — is detailed in the structured protocol.

Full regimen and dosing details available via the link below.

During pregnancy, treatment of TE should be the same as in other adults with HIV (BIII), including pyrimethamine plus sulfadiazine plus leucovorin (AIII), and in consultation with appropriate specialists (BIII).

The preferred alternative regimen for pregnant women with TE who are unable to tolerate or who fail to respond to first-line therapy is pyrimethamine plus clindamycin plus leucovorin (AIII).
