Treatment of Newly Diagnosed Localized Cerebral Ependymoma in Infants Aged 12 to 18 Months

Clinical Scenario

This protocol applies to children with age 12–18 months presenting with newly diagnosed localized intracranial ependymoma (WHO grade II or III). The diagnosis is confirmed to be without CSF or spinal dissemination. The patient's age range is a primary determinant of the postoperative management strategy.

Treatment Approach (Partial Overview)

Postoperative management in this age group involves chemotherapy as maintenance combined with consideration of conformal radiotherapy directed to the tumor bed. The specific protocol, decision criteria, and how each component is weighted for infants in this age window are detailed in the full regimen.

Postoperative conformal radiotherapy with doses of 54 Gy is recommended in children between 12 months and 18 months or in older children with poor neurological status.

Chemotherapy alone is an option in children less than 18 months old, while it is recommended in children aged less than 12 months.
