Carcinoid syndrome management is directed at controlling flushing and diarrhoea, achieving normal u5-HIAA levels, and addressing tumour burden. A structured first-line approach exists to address all three goals simultaneously.
Maximal symptom control — including resolution of flushing and diarrhoea — ideally alongside normal u5-HIAA levels and control or reduction of tumour burden.
First-line management centres on somatostatin analogue (SSA) therapy. The specific formulation selected depends on the severity of symptoms at presentation.
