Treatment of Bulimia Nervosa in Children and Adolescents

Bulimia nervosa in younger patients — children and adolescents — presents specific clinical considerations that shape the choice of first-line intervention. Age-appropriate approaches differ meaningfully from adult-focused protocols.

Patient Scenario

This protocol addresses children and adolescents (younger patients) diagnosed with bulimia nervosa. The involvement of family and developmental context is central to the clinical approach in this age group.

First-Line Approach

Evidence-based first-line treatment for this population is delivered in the outpatient setting and centres on psychotherapy that meaningfully incorporates the patient's family. The structured protocol specifies which therapeutic modalities are recommended — and how they are applied for younger patients.

Full regimen details, sequencing, and clinical decision points are available in the complete protocol below.
