Treating Bronchiectasis with Coexisting Asthma and COPD with Elevated Blood Eosinophils

Clinical Scenario

This protocol is for patients with bronchiectasis who also carry a diagnosis of asthma, or of COPD characterised by elevated blood eosinophils and a pattern of frequent exacerbations. Both comorbidities coexist with the bronchiectasis and directly affect treatment selection.

Comorbidity Consideration

In patients with bronchiectasis and concurrent asthma, or bronchiectasis and COPD with elevated blood eosinophils and frequent exacerbations, the underlying airway disease remains an active treatment target alongside the bronchiectasis itself. The presence of bronchiectasis does not remove the indication to treat the coexisting condition.

Treatment Approach

Management includes inhaled therapy directed by the coexisting asthma or COPD. The full regimen, clinical decision algorithm, and sequencing are available in the complete protocol.

References

The presence of bronchiectasis does not alter the recommendation to use inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in patients with asthma or in a subset of patients with COPD.
