Bacterial esophagitis requires a structured, time-defined treatment approach. Management targets both complete symptom resolution and healing of mucosal erosions, with formal response assessment at the eight-week mark.
The primary objectives are healing of erosive esophagitis and elimination of symptoms. Response is assessed at eight weeks, and ongoing therapy is guided by the degree of improvement achieved.

Lifestyle modification alone is not sufficient to control disease in most patients with EE. However, it should be encouraged as an adjunct to medication.
A PPI or P-CAB should be used daily for eight weeks. If improvement is noted, acid suppression can be reduced by lowering the dose of the PPI or P-CAB or switching to an H2RA.
The goals of EE treatment are to eliminate symptoms, heal EE, manage and/or prevent complications, and maintain remission.
