Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis with Eyelid Involvement in Patients Age 2 and Older

This protocol covers atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) in patients aged 2 years or older who present with eyelid involvement. Eyelid disease in this age group defines both the clinical picture and the direction of topical therapy.

Clinical Scenario

Patient is 2 years of age or older and presents with atopic keratoconjunctivitis accompanied by eyelid involvement. Age is a key determinant in selecting the appropriate topical agent and concentration for this presentation.

Treatment Approach

Eyelid involvement in this age group is managed with topical calcineurin inhibitor therapy. Which agent is selected, and at what concentration, depends on the patient’s age. The full evidence-based regimen — including the complete selection criteria and any age-specific distinctions — is available in the structured protocol below.

References

In patients 2 years old or older, eyelid involvement can be treated with pimecrolimus cream 1% or topical tacrolimus ointment.

Tacrolimus drops/ointment 0.03% is used for children 2 years to 15 years old; either 0.03% or 0.1% is used for patients 16 years and older.
