Treatment of Asbestosis in Patients Who Continue to Smoke

Asbestosis is an occupational lung disease caused by prolonged asbestos fibre inhalation. In patients with asbestosis who are active smokers or who continue to smoke, ongoing tobacco use compounds pulmonary injury and is a key modifiable factor addressed by structured management protocols.

For active smokers with asbestosis, the structured protocol includes a specific intervention targeting tobacco use — considered a consistent recommendation supported by high-quality evidence. The complete regimen, sequencing, and all management components are available in the full protocol.
