Allergic Conjunctivitis in Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis or Atopic Conjunctivitis

Clinical scenario This protocol applies to patients with allergic conjunctivitis in the setting of a confirmed diagnosis of vernal keratoconjunctivitis or atopic conjunctivitis — chronic, allergen-driven forms of ocular surface inflammation that often require a structured management approach.
Treatment approach

Management begins with general measures aimed at reducing ocular irritation, including environmental modifications to limit allergen or irritant exposure, along with supportive comfort measures. Certain topical agents targeting the allergic inflammatory pathway may also form part of the approach — the complete regimen is available via the full protocol.

Full algorithm, agent selection, and sequencing available in the structured protocol below.

References

General treatment measures for vernal/atopic conjunctivitis include modifying the environment to minimize exposure to allergens or irritants and using cool compresses and ocular lubricants.

Topical and oral antihistamines and topical mast-cell stabilizers can be useful to maintain comfort.
