Age-related macular degeneration
ICD-10 H35.3 · ICD-11 9B75.0
Treatment of Confirmed Late Wet AMD with Active Neovascularisation and Best-Corrected Visual Acuity Between 6/12 and 6/96
Clinical Scenario
This protocol addresses confirmed late age-related macular degeneration (wet, active) with neovascularisation present, where best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in the eye to be treated is between 6/12 and 6/96.
Eligibility & Timing
Active neovascular (wet) AMD must be confirmed before treatment. The BCVA of the affected eye must fall within the 6/12 to 6/96 range.
Initiate treatment as soon as possible — within 14 days of referral to the macular service.
Treatment Approach — Partial Overview
Intravitreal antiangiogenic therapy is the recommended first-line intervention for this presentation. The full protocol defines which agents are indicated, the basis for selecting among them, and which other therapies are specifically not recommended in this setting.
References
- Offer intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment for late AMD (wet active) for eyes with visual acuity within the range specified in recommendation 1.5.6.
- For eyes with confirmed late AMD (wet active) for which antiangiogenic treatment is recommended (see the section on pharmacological management of AMD), offer treatment as soon as possible (within 14 days of referral to the macular service).
