Treatment of Adult Inclusion Conjunctivitis During Pregnancy
Clinical Scenario
This protocol covers adults (18 years or older) presenting with chlamydial (inclusion) conjunctivitis who are pregnant. Pregnancy is the defining clinical factor in this scenario and directly determines which systemic treatment is appropriate.
Pregnancy consideration: Treatment selection must account for the safety of systemic antibiotic therapy during pregnancy. Not all agents used in non-pregnant adults are appropriate in this context.
Treatment Approach
Management centres on systemic antibiotic therapy chosen for its established safety profile in pregnancy. The specific agent, dosing schedule, and duration are detailed in the full structured protocol — access it below for the complete regimen.
Treatment Goal
Resolution of chlamydial conjunctivitis.
References
- Either erythromycin or amoxicillin is recommended for treatment of chlamydia during pregnancy.
- Pregnant women should not be treated with doxycycline, quinolones, or tetracyclines.
- Azithromycin 1 g orally, single dose
- Amoxicillin 500 mg orally three times a day for 7 days
- Adult conjunctivitis usually responds to systemic therapy, and sexual contacts should be treated at the same time.
