This protocol addresses patients presenting with acute cholangitis of mild severity (Grade I) — those who, at initial diagnosis, do not fulfil the criteria for Grade II (moderate) or Grade III (severe) acute cholangitis.
Grade I mild acute cholangitis is characterised by the absence of the severity markers that define moderate or severe disease. Accurate grading at initial presentation is the pivotal step before selecting the appropriate management pathway for this population.
Management of Grade I acute cholangitis is centred on biliary drainage. The full protocol defines the specific approach, timing, and clinical decision points governing how this is applied in this severity group.
